Excellent image and video quality. Very well made. Great range of extra accessories and lenses available. RAW and JPEG stills shooting. The physical sensor size certainly helps in showing off some wonderful shallow-depth-of-field effects that can be achieved by using a relatively wide aperture on a mounted lens, giving a level of flexibility that regular fixed-lens camcorders just can't achieve. Given the price of other large-sensor, interchangeable-lens systems, the NEX-VG20 offers excellent value for anyone who prefers shooting video on a camcorder-style body rather than on a video-enabled dSLR that usually 'times out' (with a buffer fill in 5, 7, 10, 15, or 25 minutes). The VG20 can shoot until you run out of storage space (which is many, many hours... to even DAYS if you're using a large enough card or a hyperdeck). If or when we use our cameras, they were either locked down on tripods or super claps, for multi-camera live concert shoots. Setup, and walked away, and take down a couple hours later. Sometimes we might have one 'in hand' (on a pole mount or steady cam vest, or behind a teleprompter system). There wasn't much 'start and stop' - and they never let me down (which is why I have so many of them, THEY REALLY WORK in a huge variety of lighting conditions)! These really are AWESOME AND INCREDIBLE light weight powerhouse cameras. In a couple of the venues, I'd stream directly to their huge flat screen TV array so people not so close to the stage could have an incredible view, as if they were sitting up front. The cameras tracked with 99.9% accuracy, despite the light shows, fog, smoke, multiple movements, and general chaos on stage. Again, professional PEAKING and ZEBRAS (if you don't know what those are, you've been really missing out). There is full auto, or full manual control over shutter speed, Iris (aperture), gain (ISO), and AE (auto exposure). That makes this camera particularly powerful and incredible. Toss in the face tracking, and wow... it's impressive. The interchangable lenses... is an e-mount, but with the appropriate adapter can be connected to all common brands of quality glass (I use Canon EF mostly, and LOVE IT, especially with the Metabones Speedboost Ultra). If I want an f0.8 or 1.2 I can... if I need to step out 600mm, 1200mm, or further, I can. Being able to use a wide variety of lenses, on a camera that can shoot for hours, saving straight to high speed SD cards (I generally use 64, 128, or 256G high speed cards... and never had a problem or hiccup). This make and model of camera also works with the Blackmagic switchers... via either HDMI or SDI (with adapter). That makes it over the top amazing. This camera can be REMOTE CONTROLLED using a very inexpensive LANC adapter (even the zoom, if you're using the PZ lenses). Write to SD cards (we preferred the 64 to 256g SDXHC high speed cards, but really I've never found any that didn't work... because we usually didn't 'just erase' the cards after 'a shoot' - but would save the footage from 2 or 3, or more, shoots 'on the card' until we were done processing the video... and had it double backed up in multiple places). The computer or external hdd is more likely to fail than a quality SDXHC card. In low light, and MASSIVE CHANGING LIGHTS (of concerts), this camera really stands out above all dSLR's (we have a bunch, and have tried a large variety). This make and model is also better than most video cameras priced under about $3500. Especially if you are looking to shoot the entire show/event, or 'run and gun' with the least issue in drastic transition. You can use LONG LIFE batteries, or for just a few dollars you can get an AC adapter that allows the camera to run 24/7/365 (until you run out of storage space on your card... if you're using one for that). The 'on board mic' can be set to 'front - stereo' (2 channel, right/left, or an amazingly solid '5.1 surround sound, through the menu. or you can plug in any external 'line in' lav or standard mic via the 1/8th input jack. On top, the handle, there is a door covering a Sony hot shoe AND cold shoe... though I doubt those shoes were ever used on these cameras. The HDMI port is useful and works great. Going to our video switch, we had to use an HDMI relay booster if the cable was longer than 10 feet; with the active relay cables, we could use the cameras over 50' away from our switch without any issue. On a tripod or monopod, steady cam rig, super clamp, or other mount it works perfectly.  'Free-hand' it's works good, because of the BUILT-IN image stabilization (a double dose, if you're also using a Canon EF lens with IS on). However, having the HDMI cable plugged in while you're 'free-handing' is not the best positioning, because the cable has to go between your fingers. Aside from all the above, the really awesome part is INTERCHANGEABLE LENSES! Not only can you use the entire array of Sony E-Mount (natively), there are adapters you can get that allows the Sony A mount, Canon EF & EFs mount lenses, and even Nikon's glass to be used on this camera body. It really rocks! Team it up with the Metabones Speedbooster E to EF mount, and you can actually GAIN A STOP OF LIGHT (really).  I've used a wide variety of Canon glass on our Sony Nex VG series cameras. The 100-400 is great, especially if you add 'digital zoom' (from the menu) with the optical zoom of that lens, and stacking EF extenders still worked for us! Talk about reaching out and touching someone!  I've also used the 50mm 1.2, 1.4, 1.8, the 70-200 f2.8, 35-350, 28-70 f2.8, 24-105 f4, and tamron's150-600mm, and a dobsonion 1200mm telescope on these. All functioned perfectly in autofocus modes (except the dobsonion, which is manual focus regardless of the camera attached). All were crystal clear, and ever bit as good of quality - in some cases better - than what we were getting from the same lens on a Canon dSLR body.  Whatever Sony does under the proverbial hood of their professional grade cameras, it's nothing short of amazing. The 3-inch touchscreen flips out from the camcorder body, and can rotate around its axis. Even though this is a camcorder first and a stills camera second, the VG20 borrows more than just naming pleasantries from the NEX camera range, grabbing a very similar menu structure and graphics. The touchscreen is easy to use, and options are reasonably well placed. The sole gripe we had with the interface was that there wasn't an obvious, easy way to exit playback mode, such as pressing a shutter button — instead, you had to exit by closing each and every menu.
Underneath the flip-out touchscreen are a couple of important buttons; namely, the manual focus and settings jog-wheel button. Sitting beneath a flap on the top handle are a hot and cold shoe for mounting a range of accessories that either do or don't need to talk to the VG20.

Pressing the extended focus button next to the second record button by the lens mount will bring up a screen with increased magnification, so you can focus precisely. Rather than having to hold it down, it will stay activated until you switch it off or begin filming. The 3-inch touchscreen flips out from the camcorder body, and can rotate around its axis. Even though this is a camcorder first and a stills camera second, the VG20 borrows more than just naming pleasantries from the NEX camera range, grabbing a very similar menu structure and graphics. The touchscreen is easy to use, and options are reasonably well placed. The sole gripe we had with the interface was that there wasn't an obvious, easy way to exit playback mode, such as pressing a shutter button — instead, you had to exit by closing each and every menu.
Underneath the flip-out touchscreen are a couple of important buttons; namely, the manual focus and settings jog-wheel button. Sitting beneath a flap on the top handle are a hot and cold shoe for mounting a range of accessories that either do or don't need to talk to the VG20. Exposure controls for adjusting shutter speed and iris are located behind the screen Pressing the extended focus button next to the second record button by the lens mount will bring up a screen with increased magnification, so you can focus precisely. Rather than having to hold it down, it will stay activated until you switch it off or begin filming. The VG20 has a range of options available for onscreen display, including peaking and zebra guides, a histogram, audio levels and a guide frame.
